Afghani activists and supporters like Hamed Wardak were undoubtedly pleased to learn that the Afghan government approved a multimillion dollar gold mine contract. This deal is the first Afghan mining project to be supported by private investors in the West. Officials from the US and Afghanistan hope this is just the first of many similar projects, and that the deals help boost the economy of the struggling country. The U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense Paul A. Brinkley stated that “this project is an important step forward for Afghanistan’s economic sovereignty.”

Geologists have known of Afghanistan’s large deposits of prized minerals for quite a while. The country is rich in iron, copper, cobalt, gold and more. In June, the U.S. Defense Department stated that the reserves were worth $1 trillion, while others claim that it is closer to $3 trillion.

One of the many organizations working to improve Afghani conditions is Fedayeen-e-sol, “Sacrificers for Peace”, co-founded by Hamed Wardak. This movement is one combining all ethnicities, which works to improve the country from the inside, by boosting the quality of everyday life and maintaining independence in a non-violent way. The organization defines itself as the “positive opposition” to the Taliban.

Mr. Wardak and many others contribute constantly to the growth and mending of Afghanistan by strengthening schools, medical centers, children’s activities and more.

In recent important Afghan news, President Karzai of Afghanistan is in the United States at the moment meeting with President Obama and House leaders. President Karzai has, so far, expressed his thanks on behalf of the Afghan nation to the American people. He thanked them for the sacrifices that they have made and he said that Afghanistan is committed to remaining a dependable partner with the United States in the global war on terrorism.

While many differences have surfaced between the two countries as of late, in recent weeks, the United States and Afghanistan have tried to downplay those differences and to focus on their mutual goals. U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry, said Money that he expects the two countries to “be able to work our way through difficulties and come back together and still find ourselves well-aligned.

Certainly, these talks and the open communication between the two leaders is good news to Afghan-American leaders such as Hamed Wardak and many others.
