Improving Afghanistan’s Rural Economies

Afghan-American Hamed Wardak has been instrumental in generating employment opportunities for Afghans. As a way of generating production in agriculture and to strengthen rural economies, USAID has financed a project which “provides animal husbandry training and goat and chicken distribution to women in need of assistance.” Since in general the Afghan culture means that only the men own livestock, “community leaders and local authorities worked with USAID to select the most vulnerable beneficiaries to participate in the project.” Now some of these women are being trained in animal husbandry and given their own livestock to start their own business and pull them and their families out of poverty. It is the USAID’s Integrated Livestock, Beekeeping, and Poultry Assistance Project which is truly helping many families get back on their feet by “providing sustainable livelihoods for families living along strategic provincial roads.”
