Building an Afghan & U.S. Partnership

Improving Afghanistan’s Rural Economies

Posted By admin on July 23, 2010

Afghan-American Hamed Wardak has been instrumental in generating employment opportunities for Afghans.  As a way of generating production in agriculture and to strengthen rural economies, USAID has financed a project which “provides animal husbandry training and goat and chicken distribution to women in need of assistance.”  Since in general the Afghan culture means that only the men own livestock, “community leaders and local authorities worked with USAID to select the most vulnerable beneficiaries to participate in the project.”  Now some of these women are being trained in animal husbandry and given their own livestock to start their own business and pull them and their families out of poverty.  It is the USAID’s Integrated Livestock, Beekeeping, and Poultry Assistance Project which is truly helping many families get back on their feet by “providing sustainable livelihoods for families living along strategic provincial roads.”

UN Refugee Agency’s Work in Afghanistan

Posted By admin on July 16, 2010

Hamed Wardak makes generous donations to the U.S. Association for the U.N. Refugee Agency in an effort to assist some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable citizens.  The organization is currently looking for additional financial aid to back emergency situations including this year’s project, the “voluntary return and reintegration of Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons back to their home country.”  This organization has helped over five million Afghans return home which makes it “the largest voluntary repatriation organized by UNHCR in the last 10 years.”  In addition, over 1.4 million Afghans benefitted from the UNHCR’s 9,000 water program “in high or potential return areas as well as those hit by drought.” In addition to this work, the organization “is trying to conduct confidence-building measures to promote peaceful inter-ethnic co-existence.”  All of these efforts are great news for those working towards a better Afghanistan.

Improved Healthcare in Afghanistan

Health care is seeing tremendous improvements in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktya where two hospitals are currently being constructed. They will be able to hold 120 beds, which will more than double what the province currently has (three hospitals with only 110 beds in total).  It is the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Bayat Foundation (national humanitarian organization) putting up the funds for these hospitals.  USAID is putting up $7 million.  More hospitals are planned for the future, most notably a small one in Gardez city (with a commitment of funds from the government of Pakistan) and in the past the World Health Organization (WHO) funded a tuberculosis center.

Hamed Wardak & NCL Holdings Sponsor World Refugee Day

Posted By admin on July 2, 2010

Each year on World Refugee Day, USA for UNHCR raises awareness by bringing together important supporters of refugee relief.  This year, the events were held from June 18th-20th with the theme “Home” and included former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, NPR senior news analyst Daniel Schorr, former refugees and UNHCR field staff.

NCL Holdings with president Hamed Wardak donated $30,000 to sponsor the 2010 World Refugee Day.  Mr. Hamed Wardak’s generous contribution will enable refugees to find new homes and new futures by helping them to resettle, repatriate and integrate back into society.

As Hamed Wardak, President of NCL Holdings explained, “The work and support provided by UNHCR is essential to refugees in Afghanistan and worldwide. I continue to sponsor UNHCR’s events like World Refugee Day and get involved in their work because the refugee women, who are the most disadvantaged group in Afghanistan, need our help.”

Hamed Wardak on Generating Employment in Afghanistan

Posted By admin on June 25, 2010

President and CEO of NCL Holdings, LLC, Hamed Wardak, through his company, attempts to generate local employment in Afghanistan.  But Wardak is not the only one trying to improve the job situation for the people of Afghanistan.  For example, in May, two municipal landfills were being developed which would keep over a thousand Afghans in work for around three months.  As well, plans to improve Shajoy’s main bazaar road have given four hundred Afghans work.  What this means in terms of money is that of the more than one million dollars set aside for this project, Afghan workers will be taking home over 95% of it.  Employment in agriculture in the very near future is planned for the construction of four major mega water dams, funded by Afghan’s central government.  This work will endure for around three years.

Hamed Wardak and US-Afghanistan Relations

Posted By admin on June 18, 2010

Hamed Wardak, founding vice president of the Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce, spends much of his time seeking ways to strengthen relations between the two countries. Recent developments via Afghan’s Finance Ministry and America’s Ambassador to Afghanistan run very much along these lines.  The Ambassador, along with Afghan’s Finance Ministry’s officials recently activated two new and seven reconstructed Inland Customs Depot Warehouses in Kabul.

It is always helpful for Afghanistan to receive funding from America, as it attests to the improvement in the quality of relations between the two countries.  This project garnered $1.2m in funding from the government of America.

Hamed Wardak and Developments in Afghanistan

Some individuals are always looking for ways to improve the lives of individuals living in Afghanistan. One of these people is Hamed Wardak, an Afghanistan activist, also seeking to improve relations between America and Afghanistan.  One of the plans for the country at the moment is the possibility of laying a railway system to escalate transports of foods, fuels, etc.  In addition, what would benefit the country’s people as well as those like Wardak who are trying to improve US-Afghan relations, is that having such a railway will see an end to the country’s isolation and lower its need for countries such as Pakistan for importing and exporting goods.  This can only lead to increased safety as using the Pakistani border on a regular basis is often risky.

Afghanistan’s Railway System

So it seems like construction has already begun on Afghanistan’s railway system, on the country’s rolling grassland in its northern parts.  This venture has been generously funded by the Manila-based Asian Development Bank.  Since this system is set to benefit the entire country (as opposed to just the north), as well as improving its links with Iran and Central Asia, this can only be a good thing for the entire people of Afghanistan, especially those keen on working towards de-isolating the country and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

Hamed Wardak and Education for Girls

Hamed Wardak is a strong supporter of improving the quality of lives for the people of Afghanistan.  But he doesn’t just show his support in theory; NCL Holdings (the company which he founded and is currently chairman and president), recently gave a large financial contribution to Nooristan Foundation’s annual gala, the proceeds of which will help the Afghan people realize their dreams, aptly entitled, “An Evening of Hope to Benefit Afghanistan.”  This is why someone like Wardak would be proud of the recent brick laying ceremony marking the construction of a new girls high school in Kabul.

Hamed Wardak on the Betterment of Life for Afghan People

Such a school – Sir Asiab Girls School – is set to make the people of Afghan extremely happy.  It will be able to take in around 3,500 students and house 20 classrooms.  It is the American-led Kabul Task Force that will be building these premises and as a man dedicated to improving relations between Afghanistan and America, this venture is definitely one in which Hamed Wardak can take pride.

Hamed Wardak and Academic Excellence

Hamed Wardak, apart from being an activist working toward better relations between America and Afghanistan, is also highly educated.  He holds a BA in Government and Political Theory from Georgetown University where he was also a Valedictorian.  In addition, he was elected an American Rhodes Scholar and studied at Oxford University.  Both these educational institutions were highly regarded in academia when Wardak studied there and that has not changed today.

Wardak and Georgetown University

Today, Georgetown University boasts many exciting extra-curricular activities and lectures.  One such lecturer is Mary Schapiro who chairs the US Securities and Exchange Commission, making her the first woman to hold such a title.  Not only that, she was appointed to this position by President Obama.  Schapiro has an impressive background in the world of finance, having being CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and more.  Such a successful woman, prominent in the financial field, would be most impressive to someone such as Hamed Wardak, a financial success in his own right.

President Obama & President Karzai Meeting

Posted By admin on May 12, 2010

In recent important Afghan news, President Karzai of Afghanistan is in the United States at the moment meeting with President Obama and House leaders.  President Karzai has, so far, expressed his thanks on behalf of the Afghan nation to the American people.  He thanked them for the sacrifices that they have made and he said that Afghanistan is committed to remaining a dependable partner with the United States in the global war on terrorism.

While many differences have surfaced between the two countries as of late, in recent weeks, the United States and Afghanistan have tried to downplay those differences and to focus on their mutual goals.  U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl Eikenberry, said Money that he expects the two countries to “be able to work our way through difficulties and come back together and still find ourselves well-aligned.

Certainly, these talks and the open communication between the two leaders is good news to Afghan-American leaders such as Hamed Wardak and many others.
